Situations Where An Emergency Vet Can Help Your Pet

Erin Steeves

Your local veterinarian can help make sure your pet stays up to date on shots and general care, but what would happen if your pet should suddenly finds itself in a precarious situation? No pet owner likes thinking about potential harm coming to their little friend, but as a responsible pet owner, it's a good idea to look into a local emergency vet that can provide immediate help when needed. Here are just some of the potential emergency situations that a good local emergency veterinarian could assist you and your pet with.

Your Pet Ate Something It Should Not Have

If you have a dog, you likely know that your best friend is always on the lookout for their next snack. Just about anything can seem like food to a dog, and it might at the very least try to put just about anything into its mouth. Dogs aren't the only animals that can do this though, cats and plenty of other pets can get themselves into trouble too. Whether you caught your animal in the act or you are now witnessing the stomach problems that are serving as consequences, you need to make sure that your pet is going to be OK.

An emergency vet can induce vomiting if your pet is not already doing so, or come up with another method for removing the substance from your pet's body. This could include even emergency surgery if needed.

Your Pet Hasn't Relieved Itself in Some Time

Have you taken your dog outside to relieve itself, but it doesn't seem to be going on its usual schedule. In fact, maybe it hasn't actually gone at all in an alarming amount of time. If your pet did eat something it shouldn't have, you might not find out until you realize that your pet's digestive system is now obstructed by a foreign object. This can happen to plenty of indoor pets too, not just dogs. If the yard, litter box, or cage seems empty of waste, get your pet to an emergency vet as soon as possible.

Your Pet Got in a Fight

Plenty of pets like to have fun by roughhousing with other animals or maybe their own owner. But sometimes that playful biting goes in a different direction. If your pet was injured in a fight with another dog, cat, or any other kind of animal, there might be bite marks or other wounds that you will want to treat immediately. An emergency vet can soothe your pet's pain or even perform surgery if needed to repair the wound.

Did you know that when a veterinarian graduates from veterinary school, they must take an oath before they are allowed to practice? This is similar to the Hippocratic Oath that doctors take upon graduating from medical school. The new vets promise that they will work to relieve animal suffering and promote the overall health of pets. They also promise to uphold their profession with dignity. If you have ever taken your pet to the vet, you've probably seen a vet live this oath firsthand. You can be confident your pet is in good hands.
